How to Hold an Internet Sale! by Jason Markum

In this article I want to talk to you about holding a sale. Many online business owners overlook holding sales, but they can be a significant source of additional income. Why do you think the major department stores (heck any offline store not just the department stores) hold so many sales?
Holding a sale on your web site is a great way to boost your income. Stores hold sales all the time, why shouldn’t your web site have one now and again?
There’s a secret to holding a successful sale though, and it’s important. You have to give your web site visitors a reason for the sale!
You can’t just say…”We’re holding a sale!” you have to give a reason, or at least use one of the standard “Sales” like you see all the time that are second nature to people (I’ll list some of these below).
Why is that? I have no idea but I’ve found it to be true time and time again over the years. Some quirk in human Psychology or something, but people need a reason or else they think something’s wrong.
“Why is this thing on sale? Is something wrong with it? Can’t sell them at the regular price eh? Must be worthless….”
…that sort of thing.
So here are a few reasons to give a sale. Be sure to let your customers know these reasons when you hold a sale. (or at least ONE of these reasons).
Ding And Dent - Tell them that you had a bunch of your product sitting around and they got banged up. They’re still perfectly ok, they just have a couple of dings - take advantage of the dings and get the thing for 30-40% off!
Free Shipping Sale - Buy anything on our web site and we’ll pay for shipping!
Close Out Sale - Ah the close out sale. You’ve got to make way for new inventory coming soon so everything must go!
Package Discount - Separately these all cost X but buy them together in this special offer package, and pay 20% less.
Holiday Sale - One of my favorites, there’s always some sort of holiday or your birthday that you can celebrate with a 25% off sale.
Buy One Get One Free - Self Explanatory.
These are just a few reasons to give a sale. Why not pick one and try it today. I think you’ll be surprised at the nice little bump in your sales. Plus, this is a good way to test different price points for your product without looking like you’re testing different prices for your product.
Here’s an idea. Every two weeks try one of these sales. Create a very simple email telling your list subscribers that you are holding one of these sales.
After you’ve gone through the entire list, add up all the additional orders you received that you wouldn’t have normally gotten had you not run the sales. Then calculate how much profit you earned from just a few minutes typing out those emails and hitting the send button on your email followup program.
I think you’ll be happily surprised!
